V Camp Night 2

The World Wants to Change Your Name
Ps Darren

Daniel 1:3-7
Then the king instructed Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, to bring some of the children of Israel and some of the king's descendants and some of the nobles,
young men in whom there was no blemish, but good-looking, gifting in all wisdom, possessing and knowledge and quick to understand, who had ability to serve in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans.
And the king appointed for them a daily provision of the king's delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and three years of training for them, so that at the end of that time they might serve before the king.
Now from among those of the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
To them the chief of the eunuchs gave names: he gave Daniel the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah; Abed-Nego.

Daniel: God is my judge
Belteshazzar: Keeper of the Hidden treasure of Bel (money)

Hananiah: God has favoured you
Shadrach: The Great Scribe (talent)

Mishael: Who is like God
Meshach: Guest of a king (status)

Azariah: God is my help
Abed-Nego: Servant of Nebo (position)

The world wants to change your name by taking away God from your name
They name you as
1) lousy
2) all about you (successful, talented)
There's nothing wrong with these pursuits but don't make it part of your identity

Daniel 1:8
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

1) Be selective with your close friends
2) Be someone a selective person would select

God is in the business and has the power to change names
Abram (exalted father) > Abraham (father of many nations)
Jacob (heel grabber) > Israel (triumphant with God)

Genesis 17:2-5
"And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly."
Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying:
"As of Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.
"No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.

1 Chronicles 4:9-10
Now Jabez was more honourable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, "Because I bore him in pain."
And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" So God granted him what he requested.

Jabez spoke over his name and rejected it
